Sunscreen filters

Why are we using them?

They protect the skin from the harmful effects of solar radiation: sunburn, premature ageing of the skin, appearance of pigment spots and risk of skin cancer.

Two main types of filters are used in cosmetic products: organic or "chemical" filters and mineral or "screen" filters. Their combined use provides effective protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
- Organic filters can be recognised in the INCI list of products under the names: "Ethyhexyl Methoxycinnamate", "Ethylhexyl salicylate", "Avobenzone", "Oxybenzone", "Octinoxate", "Homosalate", "Octocrylene", among others.
- Mineral filters are listed under the names: "Titanium dioxide" and "Zinc oxide". They can also be found in the form of "nanoparticles" ("[nano]") allowing for a reduced "whitening" effect as well as better spreading on the skin.

A large number of filters (chemical or mineral) are currently suspected of being potential allergens, endocrine disruptors, or of having a negative impact on the aquatic environment (coral bleaching). Moreover, in the form of nanoparticles, they are suspected of being able to cross the skin barrier with consequent health risks.

Erborian's vision

- Because we believe that daily sun protection is essential to maintain healthy skin, we use sunscreens in our "Finish" BB & CC products (the last step of our skincare routine), offering the skin optimal daily protection from SPF20 to SPF25.

- Our laboratory has selected a combination of the most suitable filters for "Broad spectrum" protection (against UVA and UVB), safe for their effectiveness but also for the skin's safety, defined within the framework of European regulations. Among them we find the following filters: "Ethyhexyl Methoxycinnamate", "Ethylhexyl salicylate", "Titanium dioxide" and "Zinc oxide" (in nano and non-nano form).

- Regarding the controversies related to the use of certain filters, we always respect in our formulas the standards and dosages recommended by the European regulations for each filter we use. We also carry out toxicological tests on all our final products, before they are marketed, to ensure their tolerance for the skin.

Because we keep a close eye on the evolution of current regulations regarding the most controversial active ingredients and the latest trends in ingredients that could replace them, we follow a process of continuous improvement in the formulation of our products. Our laboratory and our experts are committed to continuously refining our formulation expertise to bring the best of Care to our consumers. This is our Erborian "Safe & Conscious" commitment.
