Concealer : the way to brighter looking eyes
Reduce the appearance of under-eye circles
Ever feel like you're the only one dealing with dark circles and bags under your eyes while everyone else seems to have flawless skin?
Well, while genetics certainly plays a role, dark circles affect everyone, as stress, long days, late nights, poor sleep and ageing can all take a toll on the delicate skin beneath our eyes. Even though they occur naturally, they can be a source of frustration and self-consciousness for many of us, making us look tired, older, and less vibrant.
But don’t let under-eye circles get you down! With the right concealer and a top-notch dark circle routine, they will soon be a thing of the past. Step by step, learn how to apply concealer properly for brighter eyes. :)
What causes dark circles under the eyes?

Dark circles and bags under the eyes are usually caused by poor blood circulation and lymphatic tissue degeneration, that appear or worsen with fatigue, stress, a poor lifestyle but also with age. Let’s have a look at the different types of dark circles, each with its own causes. Here are the most common types:
Structural dark circles:
- Characteristics: structural dark circles can be recognised by hollow contours and shadows under the eyes.
- Causes: they are the result of structural anatomy (bone and muscle structure) of the eye socket. They worsen with age due to skin laxity and fat loss under the skin.
Vascular dark circles:
- Characteristics: vascular dark circles are due to visible blood vessels under the eyes. They are often bluish or purple in colour.
- Causes: they can be explained either by thin skin and/or by dilated or excess blood vessels.
Pigmented dark circles:
- Characteristics: pigmented dark circles are due to an excess of melanin (the pigment that gives skin its colour) that leads to hyperpigmentation of the under-eye area. They can be brown or black in colour.
- Causes: they generally appear with ageing but also after sun exposure. Genetics can also play a role here.
Mixed type dark circles:
This type of dark circles combines the characteristics and causes of the ones above: sunken eyes, excess pigment, visible blood vessels.
Under-eye bags:
- Characteristics: bags under the eyes are characterised by a mild swelling of the area.
- Causes: they are caused by sagging and weakened skin that worsen as we grow older, with fat shifting forward into the lower eyelids.
No matter what type of under-eye circles you have, before considering applying a concealer to cover them, the golden rule above all is to use an eye cream designed to treat them: first step to take for a fresh and rested look.

Before applying a concealer
Before using a concealer to cover dark circles, the first course of action is to use an eye cream that will answer your needs:
- Stimulate blood circulation
- Firm the eye contour
- Soothe and smooth sensitive skin
- Depigment and lighten hyperpigmentation
- Boost cell regeneration
For visible results, apply it every morning and evening.

Time to apply your concealer

To get rid of dark circles in a flash, a concealer is a must!
Specially designed for this sensitive area, with lightweight formulas, an under-eye concealer can perfectly cover and smooth under-eye circles.
When it comes to dark circles, we believe hybrid products are even better: this kind of makeup, designed to double up as skincare, offers both instant results with perfect coverage and long term benefits on bare skin, day after day; an action that enhances the benefits of the eye cream.
Concealers are available in a wide range of shades and textures, making it easy to find a perfect match and get a natural finish. The important thing then is to find the right one and use it properly. Before choosing the shade, determine how much coverage you want.
● With its encapsulated pigments that melt into the skin, CC Eye provides a light-textured formula and colour that adjusts perfectly to the delicate skin around the eyes. This light coverage concealer brightens the eyes and evens out skin tone while moisturising and smoothing fine lines and wrinkles. The skin around the eyes looks radiant, hydrated and more even, all day long.
● If you need more coverage and a real shot of hydration for younger, fresher and brighter looking eyes, use our BB Eye concealer. With its « BB skin » effect it combines a powerful smoothing complex to a concealer for more radiant and luminous eyes. Skin is softer, spotless and all signs of ageing are reduced.
● Looking for a high-coverage concealer that doesn't compromise on natural finish? Super BB Concealer is for you! A medium-to-full coverage hybrid concealer, as concentrated as a serum*, that effectively conceals under-eye circles while visibly reducing them day after day.
And the good news is, they all come with SPF!

Find your concealer shade

Finding the right shade of concealer is essential for a natural finish. First of all, you don’t want your concealer to be too dark to avoid making under-eye circles look even worse. On the other hand, if it's too light you could obtain a greyish look.
To find the concealer that will blend perfectly into your foundation and brighten your eyes, choose one shade lighter than your complexion shade match.
How to apply concealer
At this stage, there is one thing to remember: keep your hand light! A few dabs will do.
Place your concealer following the curve of the under-eye circles and work from the inner corner outwards. Use your fingertips or BB Brush to pat and blend the product into the skin. The concealer will penetrate more easily for an ultra-natural finish.
Concealer: before or after foundation?
If many experts recommend applying foundation before concealer, at Erborian we believe there are benefits to using it first.
Applying your concealer before foundation helps prevent the under-eyes from looking overdone and cakey. Then, depending on your needs, you can more easily adjust the coverage with your usual foundation or BB Cream, avoiding a mask-like effect.
It's up to you now!
*A high concentration of active ingredients, as with Erborian serums.
